Golf Glossary

1. Birdie:
   
   • Definition: Completing a hole in one stroke under par.
   • Example: If the par for a hole is 4, and a woman scores a 3, it's a birdie.

1. Bogey:
   
   • Definition: Completing a hole in one stroke over par.
   • Example: If the par for a hole is 5, and a woman scores a 6, it's a bogey.

1. Par:
   
   • Definition: The standard number of strokes a skilled golfer should take to complete a hole or a round.
   • Example: If a woman completes a par-3 hole in 3 strokes, it's a par.

1. Club:
   
   • Definition: The equipment used to hit the golf ball. Women typically use a set of clubs that may include a driver, irons, wedges, and a putter.
   • Example: "I'm using my 7-iron for this shot."

1. Driver:
   
   • Definition: The club designed for the longest shots, typically used for tee shots.
   • Example: "I'll use my driver to reach the green on this par-5 hole."

1. Irons:
   
   • Definition: Clubs with a metal head, numbered for different distances. Lower numbers hit the ball farther.
   • Example: "I'll grab my 5-iron for this approach shot."

1. Wedge:
   
   • Definition: A high-lofted club designed for short, high shots, often used for getting out of bunkers or chipping onto the green.
   • Example: "I need my sand wedge to escape this bunker."

1. Putter:
   
   • Definition: The club used on the putting green to roll the ball into the hole.
   • Example: "I'm confident in my putting with this new putter."

1. Handicap:
   
   • Definition: A measure of a golfer's ability based on past performance. A lower handicap indicates a better player.
   • Example: "Her handicap is 10, which means she's a skilled golfer."

1. Tee Box:

• Definition: The designated area where a golfer starts each hole, using a tee for the first shot.
• Example: "We'll start from the women's tee box on this hole."

1. Fairway:

• Definition: The mowed area of the golf course between the tee box and the green.
• Example: "Her drive landed right in the middle of the fairway."

1. Rough:

• Definition: The longer grass outside the fairway, which can make shots more challenging.
• Example: "I landed in the rough, so I'll need to use a more powerful club to reach the green."
